Frequently Asked Questions
Does it hurt (everyone’s first question)?
It is not pleasant, but change rarely is. We use a Zimmer Cryo, a machine that blows sub-zero air on the area treated during the laser process. This numbs the area, and reduces the pain significantly. After the session, I have heard it described as similar to a sunburn for a few days.
Why get a tattoo removed?
It varies greatly from person to person. It could be that you want a new tattoo, and need some room. Or maybe you decide the name of that significant other isn’t so significant anymore! Or maybe dolphins or kanji aren’t as cool to you as they were in 1991. Whatever the reason, we can help!
How does laser tattoo removal work?
Remember when you got your tattoo, and you were told that it was permanent? Well, your body considers ink to be a foreign particle. Normally, your immune system works to remove foreign agents from your body, but ink particles are too large for your immune system to dispatch. Thus, the ink stays below your skin's surface, where your tattoo artist expertly placed it.
So, in order to remove a permanent tattoo, you either have to remove the skin (like with chemical peels, dermabrasion, or surgical excision) or remove the ink. We prefer to remove the ink. More accurately, we prefer to help the body remove the ink using a laser tattoo removal machine that's designed to do the job. How? A tattoo removal laser emits specific wavelengths of light energy that are absorbed by certain ranges of ink colors in your tattoo. The ink particles absorb the energy, heat up, and break into smaller particles; and your lymphatic system (part of your immune system) can then carry them away from your body. And you get to keep your skin.
Does it take long?
Each session is very short, especially compared to the time it takes to get the tattoo. That being said, it usually takes multiple sessions to attempt to fully remove the tattoo, so the process itself can be an extended period.
how long do I have to wait between sessions?
Laser tattoo removal breaks up the ink in your tattoo and expels it through your lymphatic system. This process takes some time. The surface area also needs to heal. Because of this, the typical time between tattoo removal sessions is somewhere between 4 and 8 weeks. It is important that you don’t overload your lymphatic system by pushing to have sessions too close together.
